Overview

System Excellence Division / Provincial Assessment Sector / French Assessment and Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) Branch

The French Assessment and CAEC Branch is responsible for producing French Literacy and Numeracy Screeners, Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) and diploma examinations. This work includes the design, development, administration, scoring, and marking of Grades 6 Français Langue Première et Littérature (FLPL) and French Immersion Language Arts and Literature (FILAL) PATs, as well as the Grade 9 French Language Arts and Français PATs. 

All PATs reflect the outcomes of the programs of study, and the questions meet rigorous statistical and qualitative standards for reliability and validity. The branch also involves classroom teachers in every step of the development process, and teachers participate in marking students’ written responses.

Role

The Provincial Assessment Sector is seeking a highly motivated Grade 6 and 9 PAT Examiner for the Français Langue Première et Littérature (FLPL), French Immersion Language Arts and Literature (FILAL), French Language Arts (FLA), and Français PATs.

In this challenging and rewarding position, you will:

  • report to the Manager of French Assessment
  • work directly with Kindergarten to Grade 12 French Assessment Team Specialists and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment

This opportunity is ideal for a professional with:

  • experience in French Education, specifically Francophone minority education and French immersion programming
  • a high level of comfort working in an evolving digital environment as the sector transitions to online assessments  

The term of this role will be from approximately September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.

The service days per your collective agreement will be honoured, but there is no guarantee of alignment with your school authority’s natural breaks.

Most interchange opportunities are situated in Edmonton. Residing in the metro area may be required. If you are selected for an interview, you are encouraged to discuss the work location requirements with recruiters during the interview process.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to undergo security screening (including a criminal record check).

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • assisting in the development of provincial assessments for existing programs of study and new curriculum using Alberta Education and Childcare’s new digital assessment platform
  • helping to construct high-quality test questions that meet psychometric and assessment specifications while ensuring cultural relevance and authentic use of the French language for Alberta’s French Education stakeholders
  • preparing field tests
  • critically reviewing test materials in consultation with departmental subject matter experts
  • ensuring alignment with new curriculum, ministerial orders, and other guiding legislation
  • contributing to the scoring and reporting processes
  • assisting in the preparation of manuals and reports  

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • a related undergraduate degree
  • a valid permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate plus extensive current related teaching and leadership experience at the school, jurisdictional and/or provincial level  
  • a minimum of 5 years directly related teaching experience in Grade 6 FILAL/FLPL and/or Grade 9 Français/French Language Arts in a minority context
  • high quality ethics
  • a strong understanding of Alberta Education and Childcare’s French education systems and stakeholders
  • sound project management skills and organizational skills
  • the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment
  • a strong commitment to excellence and assurance in education
  • Please submit a bilingual cover letter that demonstrates your ability to write in both English and French with at least two paragraphs in French

Assets

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • related graduate work
  • experience with Provincial Assessment Tests development and scoring processes
  • leadership experience in Alberta’s Francophone regional authorities and/or French immersion programs
  • experience with large-scale standardized French language assessments
