The English Language Arts and Literature, Fine Arts, Social Studies (EFASS) Branch leads the development and maintenance of curriculum and resources for the following areas in English and French:
- K-12 English Language Arts and Literature
- K-12 Fine Arts
- K-12 Social Studies
Role
The Humanities, Wellness, and French Education Curriculum Sector is seeking a highly motivated Social Studies Curriculum Consultant.
In this challenging and rewarding position, you will:
- report to the Director of English Language Arts and Literature, Social Studies, and Fine Arts Branch or delegate
- work with a team to support Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) Social Studies curriculum development and maintenance in alignment with The Guiding Framework for the Design and Development of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Curriculum
- demonstrate strong communication, research, and leadership skills as you work collaboratively with staff, clients, and education stakeholders (i.e. teachers, post-secondary community, administrators, parents, First Nations, Métis and Inuit representatives, and Francophone representatives) relating to current and future curriculum

The term of this role will be from approximately September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.
The service days per your collective agreement will be honoured, but there is no guarantee of alignment with your school authority’s natural breaks.

Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- providing specialized expertise and advice to support the development and maintenance of high-quality Kindergarten to Grade 12 Social Studies curriculum in alignment with The Guiding Framework for the Design and Development of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Curriculum
- synthesizing and summarizing researched content from a variety of sources (e.g., scholarly peer-reviewed academic journals, administrative publications, government studies, books, jurisdictional reviews, etc.) to support development of future curriculum
- establishing and maintaining strong communication and working relationships with stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate information flow and identification of issues
- providing curriculum information to teachers, school administrators, school district administrators, and members of the public, as requested
- contributing to the daily operations of the branch by responding to requests for information, participating in meetings, and contributing to additional projects
- working in close collaboration within the Curriculum and Career Education Division, across Alberta Education and Childcare, and with other government ministries
- maintaining strong communication and working relationships with key partners, clients, and community partners to ensure timely and accurate information flow and identification of issues
- contributing to the daily operations of the Branch by responding to requests for information, participating in meetings, and contributing to additional projects
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- a university degree in Education
- a valid permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate, plus extensive current related teaching and/or leadership experience at the school, jurisdictional and/or provincial level
- a minimum 5 years of experience teaching Social Studies Grades 10 to 12
- high quality ethics
- an understanding of the essential knowledge, skills and competencies needed by students in Social Studies, as well as how literacy and numeracy are the foundational building blocks of learning
- theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching and learning processes in Social Studies and related disciplines
Assets
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- a related graduate degree
- an understanding of The Guiding Framework for the Design and Development of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Curriculum
- fluency in the French language
