System Excellence Division / Teaching and Leadership Excellence Sector / Governance and Registries Branch
The Governance and Registries Branch have several responsibilities, including:
- supporting the recruitment and secretariat operations of several public agencies and committees, including the Professional Conduct and Competency General Panel, whose members serve on disciplinary hearing and appeal committees
- overseeing the appointment process for superintendents of Alberta’s public, separate, Francophone, and charter school authorities
- the appointment of officers under the Certification of Teachers and Teacher Leaders Regulation
- managing and maintaining the technical aspects of the on-line teacher and teacher leader registry and Teacher Workforce Information System (TWINS); an internal online registry that allows individuals to apply for teacher and teacher leader certification in Alberta and view the status of their application
Role
The Teaching and Leadership Excellence Sector is seeking a highly motivated Governance Consultant.
In this position, you will:
- report to the Director of Governance and Registries Branch or delegates.
This opportunity is ideal for a professional with:
- knowledge of teacher certification matters and experience in updating policies and procedure documents for appointments made under the Education Act and related regulations for superintendents, officers and committee members
- an interest in technology, curiosity about how systems work, and a commitment to helping others navigate them confidently
The term of this role will be from approximately September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.
The service days per your collective agreement will be honoured, but there is no guarantee of alignment with your school authority’s natural breaks.
Most interchange opportunities are situated in Edmonton. Residing in the metro area may be required. If you are selected for an interview, you are encouraged to discuss the work location requirements with recruiters during the interview process.
The successful candidate for this position will be required to undergo security screening (including a criminal record check).
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- supporting the superintendent appointment process by reviewing, tracking, and coordinating appointment activities
- reviewing business processes related to superintendent appointments and designated signing authorities (officers under the Certification of Teachers and Teacher Leaders Regulation)
- recommending and implementing practical improvements
- collaborating with other teams to document workflows, clarify roles, and support smooth adoption of process or policy changes
- supporting the TWINS system by troubleshooting issues, assisting users, and maintaining/updating public‑facing materials
- supporting other areas of Teaching and Leadership Excellence in the areas of teacher certification, grants and bursaries or practice assurance
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- a Bachelor of Education undergraduate degree
- a valid Alberta Permanent Professional Certificate in teaching
- ability to analyze information, solve problems, and provide clear, practical recommendations
- high quality ethics
- strong communication and collaboration skills to work with internal and external partners
- comfort working with information systems, supporting users, and updating guidance materials
- experience with governance processes, workflow documentation, or business process improvements
Assets
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- knowledge of the K–12 education system, superintendent roles, and related legislation or regulations
- experience with TWINS
