Overview
System Excellence Division / Provincial Assessment Sector / Early Years Assessments and Provincial Achievement Tests Branch
The Early Years Assessments and Provincial Achievement Tests Branch provides provincial assessments for Kindergarten to Grade 9. These assessments include literacy and numeracy screenings and provincial achievement tests (PATs). We also provide support to classroom teachers and administrators on sound assessment and reporting practices for K-9 programs.
Role
The Provincial Assessment Sector is seeking a highly motivated junior high school teacher of English Language Arts and Social Studies.
In this challenging and rewarding position, you will:
- report to the Director of Early Years Assessments and Provincial Achievement Tests Branch
- assist in the design and development of provincial assessments
This opportunity is ideal for a professional with:

The term of this role will be from approximately September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.
The service days per your collective agreement will be honoured, but there is no guarantee of alignment with your school authority’s natural breaks.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to undergo security screening (including a criminal record check).
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- supporting the design and development of the Grade 9 English Language Arts and Social Studies PATs
- helping to construct high-quality test questions that meet psychometric and assessment specifications
- helping to prepare field tests
- critically reviewing test materials
- contributing to the scoring and reporting process
- assisting in the preparation of manuals and reports
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- a related undergraduate degree
- a valid permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate
- a minimum of 5 years of directly related teaching experience of English Language Arts 9 and/or Social Studies 9
- sound project management skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment
- high quality ethics
- strong commitment to excellence and assurance in education
- a high level of comfort working in a digital environment
Assets
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- extensive current related teaching and leadership experience at the school, jurisdictional and/or provincial level
- previous experience working with the Provincial Assessment Sector and/or Alberta Education and Childcare
- related graduate work
