Overview

Curriculum and Career Education / Humanities, Wellness, and French Curriculum Sector / Wellness and Languages Branch

The Wellness and Languages Branch leads the development and maintenance of curriculum for the following areas in English and French:

  • Physical Education and Wellness (Kindergarten to Grade 6)
  • Health and Life Skills (Grades 7 to 9)
  • Physical Education (Grades 7 to 12)
  • Career and Life Management (High School)
  • English as an Additional Language (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12)
  • International Languages (Kindergarten to Grade 12)

Role

In this challenging and rewarding position, you will:

  • report to the Director of Wellness and Languages Branch or delegate
  • work with a team to support:
    • Physical Education and Wellness (Kindergarten to Grade 6)
    • Health and Life Skills (Grades 7 to 9)
    • Physical Education and Wellness (Grades 7 to 12)
    • Career and Life Management (High School)
  • play an integral role in the development of future curriculum in alignment with The Guiding Framework for the Design and Development of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Curriculum
  • demonstrate strong communication, research, and leadership skills as you work collaboratively with staff, clients, and education stakeholders (i.e. teachers, post- secondary community, administrators, parents, First Nations, Métis and Inuit representatives, and Francophone representatives) relating to current and future curriculum

The term of this role will be from approximately September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2028.

The service days per your collective agreement will be honoured, but there is no guarantee of alignment with your school authority’s natural breaks.

Most interchange opportunities are situated in Edmonton. Residing in the metro area may be required. If you are selected for an interview, you are encouraged to discuss the work location requirements with recruiters during the interview process.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to undergo security screening (including a criminal record check).

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • providing expertise and support for the development of future Physical Education and Wellness curriculum that supports the vision for student learning which enables students to gain the knowledge and skills to form the foundations for successful and fulfilling lives, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world
  • supporting Alberta’s commitment to First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives and experiences in curriculum in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action
  • providing support for maintenance and implementation of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Wellness-related curriculum with internal and external stakeholders where appropriate
  • conducting and using research from a variety of sources (i.e., scholarly peer-reviewed academic journals, administrative publications, government studies, books, jurisdictional reviews, etc.) that informs curriculum development
  • collaborating within the Curriculum and Career Education Division and across Alberta Education and Childcare and other government ministries
  • providing curriculum information to teachers, school administrators, school district administrators and members of the public, as requested
  • maintaining strong communication and working relationships with key partners, clients, and community partners to ensure timely and accurate information flow and identification of issues
  • engaging with key partners, clients, and community partners, face-to-face and virtually as appropriate, to access input and feedback on future wellness-related curriculum
  • contributing to the daily operations of the branch by responding to requests for information, participating in meetings, and contributing to additional projects
     

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • a university degree in Education
  • a valid permanent Alberta Teaching Certificate, plus extensive current related teaching and/or leadership experience at the school, jurisdictional and/or provincial level
  • a minimum 5 years of experience teaching Physical Education and Wellness-related curriculum
  • high quality ethics
  • an understanding of the essential knowledge, skills and competencies needed by students in Physical Education and Wellness-related curriculum, as well as how literacy and numeracy are the foundational building blocks of learning
  • an understanding of physical literacy, health literacy, and social-emotional learning
    theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching and learning processes in Physical Education and Health Education
  • a drive for results, with initiative, flexibility, and strong problem-solving skills
  • the ability to build collaborative environments, demonstrate resiliency and agility, and develop self
  • excellent communication (oral, written, computer literacy) and interpersonal skills
