Introduction
Municipal Affairs administers the Safety Codes Act, which establishes a legislative framework for the development of safety codes and the delivery of safety codes services for municipalities, industry and the public in Alberta.
The Safety Codes Council makes recommendations on public safety and accredits municipalities, corporations and agencies to deliver inspection, permitting and enforcement services as well as train and certify safety codes officers. The Alberta Boilers Safety Association administers the pressure vessel discipline and the Alberta Elevating Devices and Amusement Rides Safety Association to administer elevating devices, amusement rides and passenger ropeways.
Safety codes system
The safety codes system includes the development, interpretation and enforcement of safety codes under the Safety Codes Act, which establishes codes, standards, and administrative processes in 10 disciplines:
- building (including energy efficiency in buildings and accessibility)
- fire
- plumbing
- gas
- electrical
- elevators
- amusement rides
- passenger ropeways (such as ski lifts)
- pressure equipment
- private sewage disposal systems
