Safety codes

Codes for a range of safety disciplines used to keep the public safe in the places they live, work and play.


Municipal Affairs administers the Safety Codes Act, which establishes a legislative framework for the development of safety codes and the delivery of safety codes services for municipalities, industry and the public in Alberta.

The Safety Codes Council makes recommendations on public safety and accredits municipalities, corporations and agencies to deliver inspection, permitting and enforcement services as well as train and certify safety codes officers. The Alberta Boilers Safety Association administers the pressure vessel discipline and the Alberta Elevating Devices and Amusement Rides Safety Association to administer elevating devices, amusement rides and passenger ropeways.

Safety codes system

The safety codes system includes the development, interpretation and enforcement of safety codes under the Safety Codes Act, which establishes codes, standards, and administrative processes in 10 disciplines:


Receive bulletins by email for interpretations, clarifications, recommended practices or provincewide variances on codes and standards matters related to the Safety Codes Act.
