Overview
Today, Highway 11 is a 4-lane divided highway between Red Deer and Sylvan Lake, and a 2-lane undivided highway between Sylvan Lake and Eckville. The section of Highway 11 between Red Deer and Eckville is designated as a future freeway.
A freeway corridor study completed in 2005 identified 5 locations for new interchanges. It also recommended upgrading the existing interchange at Highways 2 and 11. The 5 recommended interchanges were proposed for:
- Highway 766
- Range Roads 25 and 15
- Highway 20
- Range Road 282
The objective of this functional planning study is to review possible options to defer the ultimate freeway conversion by implementing multiple roundabouts along the highway and maintaining the existing interchange configuration at Highways 2 and 11. This study will examine all 5 future interchange locations, and recommend options to accommodate future traffic growth through intersection improvements and/or roundabouts.
In addition, the westbound bridge located at the interchange on Highways 2 and 11 needs replacing as part of the future Highway 2 expansion. This planning study will also determine the most appropriate method for the bridge replacement.
Timelines
The functional planning study is now complete. The recommendation plans were developed based on the overall study and feedback Albertans provided during the virtual information sessions.
Benefits
These improvements will support safe and efficient travel along Highway 11 for several decades, delaying investment in expensive infrastructure. They will also address capacity and congestion issues on Highway 11.
