Summer work experience

Two programs annually run from May to August and:

  • hire several first-year and second-year law students
  • give students valuable work experience

Civil law

Our Legal Services division hires several law students for this popular program. If hired, you’ll work for one of our dynamic teams:

  • Aboriginal and Constitutional Law Team
  • Agriculture and Forestry; Arts, Culture and Status of Women; Indigenous Relations; Treasury Board and Finance Team
  • Children’s Services; Seniors, Community and Social Services Team

Civil law recruitment

Our positions are filled using this process:

  1. Students apply for a position on the Government of Alberta Jobs website.
  2. We review and screen the applications.
  3. We interview students according to the rules set by the Law Society of Alberta.
  4. We hire first-year students in the winter and second-year students in the fall.

Criminal law

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) hires law students for this demanding program.

The Division’s summer student program is designed to be flexible. Successful candidates will be given the choice of the following locations for summer employment:

  • Calgary
  • Calgary Rural and Regional Response
  • Edmonton
  • Edmonton Rural and Regional Response
  • Fort McMurray
  • Fort Saskatchewan
  • Grande Prairie
  • Hinton
  • Lethbridge
  • Medicine Hat
  • Peace River
  • Red Deer
  • Slave Lake
  • St. Paul
  • Wetaskiwin

It’s also possible for students to gain exposure to different types of prosecutions by working in more than one location during the program. The positions are split between first-year and second-year students.

If hired, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • appear in court
  • conduct traffic prosecutions
  • work alongside lawyers who appear in court daily
