Overview

The Alberta Public Service provides opportunities for students and graduates to help them develop valuable workplace skills and build a career through employment with the Alberta Public Service.

Student opportunities

Ministries and departments offer employment opportunities that provide current students with the opportunity to:

  • learn about the Alberta Public Service
  • develop workplace skills
  • gain career-related experience

The Alberta Public Service also partners with academic institutions that have work experience and co-operative education programs to host placements for students. These placements provide students with the opportunity to gain career related experience.

  • Summer student opportunities

    The APS is looking for motivated, energetic and self-starting summer students who are interested in developing valuable workplace skills and building a career through employment with the Alberta Public Service.

    Justice and Solicitor General’s summer law student programs can help you gain valuable work experience in civil or criminal law.

  • Articling Program

    The Articling program is an opportunity for you to gain comprehensive public service experience and considerable courtroom experience.

    We offer 3 streams of articles:

    • ACPS regional-focused positions
    • combined ACPS and Legal Services positions
    • Legal Services Division – Civil

Internships and graduate opportunities

The Alberta Public Service offers graduate entry-level employment and internship opportunities that provide recent post-secondary graduates with:

  • hands-on experience putting their education to work
  • challenging and rewarding work

Graduate entry-level employment

The Alberta Public Service offers temporary and permanent entry-level employment in a variety of occupations.

Each ministry and department is responsible for recruiting to their student and graduate opportunities. For more information, contact the ministry or check out current Alberta Public Service job postings.

Internships

Internships are paid, temporary employment usually 6 months to 2 years in length and are offered in a variety of occupations. To be eligible, graduates must have completed their relevant program training within the last 2 years.

All open internships can be found on the Government of Alberta jobs board.

  • Alberta Indigenous Intern Program

    This 2-year program offers post-secondary grads professional development and an opportunity to work with Indigenous community partners.

    During the 2-year internship, interns will:

    • spend the first 6 months working in a provincial government ministry
    • spend 6 months working with an Indigenous community partner, or one that serves a high number of Indigenous people
    • return to a provincial ministry for the final 12 months

  • Children’s Services/Community and Social Services Internship

    The Children’s Services/Community and Social Services Indigenous Internship Program provides Indigenous post-secondary graduates with challenging roles within the Alberta government. There are 12-month placements throughout the year in 2 departments that focus on social services.

  • Municipal Internship Program

    The Municipal Internship Program is an 18-month intensive program that allows participants to work under the mentorship of a senior municipal professional, develop a broad understanding of municipal government and develop skills and competencies in administration, finance or land use planning.
