Driver licensing changes
Starting April 1, 2023, drivers are no longer required to take the advanced road test to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.

Overview
You must pass a road test conducted by a qualified government or licensed driver examiner before you can receive a Class 1 to 6 driver's licence.
Book your road test
Step 1. Make sure you are eligible
To be able to take the road test, you must meet the eligibility criteria for the requested Class of driver's licence.
Ensure your vehicle meets safety standards for road tests.
Drivers taking a passenger vehicle road test will be required to follow the health and safety guidelines established by registry agents.

Step 2. Pay any outstanding fines
All outstanding fines owed to the Government of Alberta must be paid before you can book a road test.
Step 3. Book your road test
Book your road test using one of the following ways:
- online
- Passenger vehicle (Class 5 and 6) road tests are booked through a registry agent. Find a registry agent offering road tests.
- Commercial vehicle (Class 1 to 3) road tests
- in-person at an Alberta registry agent
You will need your Motor Vehicle Identification (MVID) number to book your road test. This is the 9-digit number found near the barcode of your Alberta driver’s licence.
A driver’s knowledge test to obtain a Class 7 learner’s licence or other levels of licences can be booked at a registry agent. Phone ahead to find a local registry office to ensure it is open and confirm whether they provide the service you require.
Driving schools
All driving schools are responsible for determining when they can provide services in a safe manner.
Passing your road test
Each type of road test has a maximum number of points you can get before you fail.
For example, you get points when you:
- don’t show a necessary driving skill, such as not checking mirrors or blind spots
- fail to follow the rules of the road, such as not observing road signs or making an incorrect turn
- complete a manoeuver poorly, such as signalling too soon or too late, or being too aggressive or too hesitant.
You will fail if you get:
- more than 50 points on the Class 1, 2 or 3
- more than 75 points on the Class 5 or 6
You can also get an automatic fail or an “F” on your road test if you:
- endanger a pedestrian or another driver
- drive unsafely
- break traffic laws
Fees
Passenger vehicle road tests are delivered in the private sector by driver examiners contracted or employed by registry agents.
Registry agents set the fees they wish to charge for the road tests they deliver. Registry agents are also required to publish their fees online. For more information about the fees for Class 5 or 6 road tests, contact your local registry office.
Commercial vehicle road tests are delivered by government examiners. Commercial road test fees are the same across the province.
