The initial draft of kindergarten to grade 6 (K to 6) curriculum was released to the public on March 29, 2021 for review. Since then, we have been listening to all feedback through a transparent curriculum development and review process.

We are currently engaging with education partners and Albertans on the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum through a comprehensive and phased approach.

Preliminary engagement

From September 18 to October 16, 2023, more than 12,800 surveys were completed by Albertans. Their responses provided input about what they would like students to learn in the new social studies curriculum. Find out what they said:

Targeted engagement

From September 2023 to January 2024, Alberta Education engaged with education partners, teachers, multicultural organizations, Indigenous and francophone communities and other education specialists to inform development of the draft K to 12 social studies subject overview, and the content of draft K to 6 social studies curriculum.

From March 14 to April 2, 2024, Albertans could have their say on key learnings within the draft K to 12 social studies curriculum through an online feedback form.

Alberta Education will consider all feedback to refine the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum before its anticipated release in spring for classroom piloting.

Classroom piloting

It is expected that school authorities will have the option to pilot the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum in classrooms in the 2024-25 school year and provide further feedback.

We will carefully consider feedback from all engagement activities and classroom piloting, as well as research and best practices, to finalize the new social studies curriculum.

Input received

Between March 2021 and February 2023, we heard valuable insights on the draft K to 6 curriculum through an online survey, feedback form, virtual engagement sessions, partner organization engagements and classroom piloting. See how we got here.

Draft curriculum in subjects and grades not yet implemented will be released at a later date for further engagement with Albertans and education partners.
