Get involved

We are resuming engagement on draft K to 6 social studies curriculum through a comprehensive and phased approach.

Preliminary engagement

From September 18 to October 16, 2023, more than 12,000 Albertans provided input through an online survey. Find out what they said:

Leger Report – Social Studies Curriculum Engagement (English only)

Survey results will be used to inform development of draft K to 6 social studies curriculum before it is released to the public for further engagement in 2024.

Targeted engagement

From September 2023 to January 2024, Alberta Education is engaging with education partners, teachers, multicultural organizations, Indigenous and francophone communities and other education specialists to inform development of the scope and sequence of K to 12 social studies curriculum, and the content of draft K to 6 social studies curriculum.

Public engagement

In early 2024, Albertans will have the opportunity to provide feedback on key learnings within K to 12 social studies curriculum and view the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum to provide additional feedback.

More details about public engagement activities will be shared as they become available.

Classroom piloting

In the 2024-25 school year, school authorities will have the option to participate in a piloting process to test the draft K to 6 social studies curriculum in classrooms and provide further feedback.

We will carefully consider feedback from all engagement activities and classroom piloting, as well as research and best practices, to finalize the new social studies curriculum.

Input received

Between March 2021 and February 2023, we heard valuable insights on the draft K to 6 curriculum through an online survey, feedback form, virtual engagement sessions, partner organization engagements and classroom piloting.

Outcomes

We listened to all feedback from classroom piloting and engagement activities between March 2021 and February 2023. This input was used to revise and release K to 6 subjects as follows:

  • final English language arts and literature, mathematics and physical education and wellness curriculums for implementation that began in the 2022-23 school year
  • final French first language and literature, French immersion language arts and literature and science curriculums for implementation that began in the 2023-24 school year

Input from all engagement activities from September 2023 to January 2024 will be used to revise and release draft K to 6 social studies curriculum for further engagement with Albertans and education partners in winter 2024.

Draft curriculum in subjects and grades not yet implemented will be released at a later date for further engagement with Albertans and education partners.
