Applications for family day home agency licences are considered when the Alberta government determines there is a need for additional agencies.
Alberta is not accepting licensing applications for new family day home agencies at this time.
Overview
Under the Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulation and Family Day Home Standards, licensed family day home agencies recruit, train and support family day home educators who provide childcare in their own homes. Licensed agencies offer assurance to families by monitoring each home for health, safety and program quality standards.
Alberta’s childcare licensing officers work with agencies to ensure these standards are met and make decisions under the authority of the Statutory Director – a designated official responsible for licensing and enforcement.

Licensing handbook
The Licensing handbook for family day home agencies is a key resource for both new applicants and current licence holders. It explains how to apply for or renew a licence and outlines operational requirements. This handbook aligns with but does not replace the Act, Regulation or Family Day Home Standards.
Apply for a licence
For a complete list of steps and documents needed to obtain a licence, read through ‘Part 5: The Application Submission Process’ in the Licensing handbook above.
Once you have secured a location for your agency, you can apply in one of 2 ways:
- Submit a complete application with all required documents in one step; or
- Submit a partial application and get guidance from licensing staff throughout the process (see how to get help below).
Forms and checklists
- Family day home program complaint record – form for documenting a complaint and its outcome regarding a family day home program.
- Family day home program initial screening checklist – use this checklist during the initial screening process for family day home educators. Two home visits must be completed before a program can be approved to care for children.
- Family day home program profile – licensed agencies use the family day home program profile to assist families in finding a family day home program that suits their needs.
- Family day home program profile sharing of information acknowledgement – consent form to be signed by family day home program educators, allowing an agency to share information from the program profile document with families.
- Licensed family day home agency home visitor / consultant checklist – licensed agencies use this form when they visit family day home programs to check how well they are following the Family Day Home Standards.
Note: Fillable PDF forms may not open properly on some mobile devices and web browsers. See the step-by-step guide or contact PDF form technical support.
Renew your licence
Your initial licence will be valid for a minimum term of one year up to a maximum term of 3 years. To continue operating, licence holders must apply to renew their current licence before it expires.
A renewal package will be sent to the licence holder 90 days before the licence expires. The package includes forms and requirements that must be submitted at least 30 days before expiry, including a non-refundable $100 renewal fee (payable by cheque to the Government of Alberta). A renewal inspection will be scheduled as part of the process. Refer to ‘Part 5, Step 9’ in the Licensing handbook for more details.
Adjust your licence
As a licence holder, you can request to modify the terms and conditions of your licence to better meet the needs of your agency or respond to unique circumstances. Requests are reviewed by licensing staff within 10 business days to confirm they align with the Act and Regulation and support the safety and well-being of children in your care. Refer to ‘Part 5, Step 9’ in the Licensing handbook for more details.
