Approved family day homes

Work with a licensed agency to become a family day home educator and provide childcare in your home.

Overview

A family day home is when childcare is provided within a home-based setting by a family day home educator. In Alberta, a family day home can operate with or without a licence, as long as the educator provides care for no more than 6 children, not including their own.

To be licenced, a family day home needs to operate under a contract with an agency that is licensed by government, and the educator needs to be registered as an early childhood educator (ECE).

If you are interested in providing licensed childcare from home, this page will help you understand your role, requirements and how to get started.

Standards manual

The Family Day Home Standards Manual provides detailed operating standards for both licensed family day home agencies and individual contracted family day home educators. This includes requirements for home safety, child supervision, agency monitoring responsibilities and day-to-day program operations.

Work with an agency

Licensed family day home agencies recruit, approve and support family day home educators to ensure programs meet the requirements outlined in the Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulation and the Family Day Home Standards.

Agencies work closely with Alberta’s childcare licensing officers, who enforce these standards under the authority of the Statutory Director – a designated official responsible for licensing and enforcement.

When you sign a contract with a licensed agency, you become an approved family day home educator. Your agency will provide training and ongoing support, as well as conduct regular home visits to help you maintain a safe, high-quality program that meets provincial standards.

Agency consultants help family day home educators with several aspects of their work, including:

    • developing programs for children at different stages of development
    • providing advice about nutritious meal planning
    • choosing safe, developmentally appropriate toys and equipment
  • Family day home contracts

The document below explains how agencies are funded and includes rules on the fees they can charge to educators:

Inspections

Licensed family day home agencies are required to monitor family day homes at least 6 times per year with both scheduled and unscheduled visits. Agency consultants use the form below when they visit family day home programs to check how well they are following the family day home standards. In addition, Ministry staff conduct annual visits and inspect at least 10% of each agency’s active programs, or a minimum of 2 programs for smaller agencies.
