Law Enforcement Review Board

The board hears appeals about the decisions on police officer complaints and the cancellations of peace officer appointments.

Overview

The Law Enforcement Review Board is an independent and impartial body established under the Police Act.

The principal activity of the board is to hear appeals about:

  • police services’ decisions on complaints about the actions of police officers
  • the Alberta government’s cancellations of individual peace officer appointments

Who can appeal

Appeals can be filed by any one of the affected parties:

  • citizens
  • police officers – from municipal or Indigenous police services
  • peace officers – sheriffs, fish and wildlife officers, community peace officers, regulatory inspection and investigative officers

At the request of the Alberta government, the board may also investigate any matter relating to policing.

Membership

The Law Enforcement Review Board is an expert body that’s made up of people who have a broad range of experience in the community.

All board members are appointed by the lieutenant-governor. The chair of the board must be an active member of the Law Society of Alberta.

Appeal hearing bulletins

Every month, the Law Enforcement Review Board releases a bulletin that lists the appeal hearings for the next month.

Decisions

The Law Enforcement Review Board publishes the reasons for all of its appeal decisions. Before doing this, the reasons are provided in writing to the:

  • affected citizen(s)
  • affected officer(s)
  • appropriate police service
