Helping families
The Family Information Liaison Unit is a single point of contact for families of missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP), whether they are women, girls, 2S+ people, men or boys.
We help families:
- find information
- get counselling and other supports
Our unit was started during the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Blood relatives and others
The Family Information Liaison Unit helps families who have a missing or murdered loved one.
Family members could include:
- blood relations
- non-blood relations such as:
- adopted family
- those considered kin
- street family
The type of information we can share is subject to privacy regulations and legislation.
How we help
Families can get:
- information about the justice system and legal processes
- updates on criminal investigations, court proceedings and fatality inquiries involving their loved ones
- connections to counselling, spiritual support and Elders
- information about a loved one who is missing and murdered in another jurisdiction, through coordination with Family Information Liaison Units in other provinces and territories
The Family Information Liaison Unit actively engages with communities by:
- participating in events focused on MMIP, including memorials, awareness campaigns and collaborative initiatives with Indigenous organizations and advocacy groups
- delivering educational presentations on available support services and justice processes and facilitating wellness-focused activities and culturally grounded community gatherings to promote healing and connection
