Overview
If you are a victim of a serious Criminal Code (Canada) offence or family members of a homicide victim, you can get reimbursed for expenses to help you attend court proceedings, such as to deliver victims impact statements or attend sentencing.
This program supplements the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) Witness Expense program.
Who can apply
You can apply for court related travel expenses if you are:
- a family member (up to 2) of a homicide victim
- a victim of a serious Criminal Code offence
- a support person, such as a family member or friend that may accompany the victim to provide emotional support during their court attendance
- certain conditions apply; contact us for any questions
You may not be eligible if you:
- travelled less than 25 km from your home or place of employment to the court location
- were subpoenaed to attend court as a witness
- were required at the court location on the same day as the proceeding for another purpose
Eligible expenses
Eligible travel expenses include:
- transportation
- hotel expenses
- mileage from your residence or place of employment if travelling more than 25km from the court location
- meals (per diem amount)
- private accommodations (per diem amount)
- childcare expenses
Receipts may be required for some expenses.
How to apply
Step 1. Fill out the form
