Introduction
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is a publicly funded and administered program that provides eligible Alberta residents with coverage for medically necessary physician and hospital services in Alberta and other Canadian provinces.
Residents must register for AHCIP to receive these services. While AHCIP covers essential services, it does not cover everything, and Albertans often need supplementary health insurance for expenses such as prescription drugs, dental care, and vision care.

If you travel outside of Alberta, know what is covered before you leave – not every health service you receive outside of Alberta is covered or reimbursed once you leave. It is recommended to purchase additional insurance when you travel outside of Alberta.
