Ministry responsible: Mental Health and Addiction
Overview
The Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence Act, 2024 (formerly Bill 17) is the next step to strengthen Alberta’s mental health and addiction system and support the Alberta Recovery Model.
The act establishes the Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence (CoRE) as a new crown corporation to provide leadership in building a recovery-oriented system of care for people struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. CoRE will support government and help advance the Alberta Recovery Model by:
- providing data-driven and evidence-based recommendations
- conducting research and program evaluation
- advancing evidence-based policies and global best practices
In Alberta and across Canada, more scientific evidence is needed to understand and help those impacted by mental health and addiction within our society. CoRE will generate new and expanded evidence-based best practices to most effectively help people pursue and maintain recovery.
Key changes
The Canadian Centre of Recovery Excellence Act, 2024, amends the Financial Administration Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to allow for the creation of a new crown corporation to support recovery-oriented care.
The privacy of Albertans is a top priority for the Alberta government. CoRE will be governed by legislation and policies that protect the confidentiality of Albertans’ health and personal information.
Next steps
- CoRE is expected to become operational summer 2024.
