Overview
The Spy Hill site in Calgary contains about 130 million tonnes of sand and gravel. This material is needed for many of the infrastructure and transportation projects underway in Alberta.
In 2005, the Government of Alberta awarded a contract to recover sand and gravel underneath Spy Hill land to the BLV Group, a joint venture of 3 operators:
- BURNCO Rock Products Ltd.
- Lafarge Canada Inc.
- Volker Stevin Contracting Ltd.
Project details
The contract with BLV Group includes:

Sand and gravel collected is used for several Calgary road projects. The recovery site was named for the Stoney Trail portion of the Calgary Ring Road, which used gravel collected from Spy Hill.
BLV Group also sells aggregate for use in the Calgary area.
