Pesticide service registration

Businesses or individuals that provide pesticide services are subject to requirements to protect human health, safety and the environment.

Overview

As stated in the Pesticide (Ministerial) Regulation, any business in Alberta advertising or providing a pesticide service must hold a pesticide service registration.

These businesses must be registered to use or apply a pesticide (whether hired or volunteer):

  • as a pesticide application service
  • on rights-of-way
  • on all public land (including all provincial and municipal lands)
  • within forest management

Registration application forms for pesticide services are completed through the Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS).

How to use DRAS

If you do not have access to DRAS, set up your Alberta.ca Account for Organizations.

Once you have created or logged on to your Alberta.ca Account or Alberta.ca Account for Organizations account, you can log in to DRAS.

  • Once you are in DRAS, there are 4 videos to guide you through the DRAS application, depending on the role you play.

The current scope of pesticides work in DRAS does not include special use approval – this will be built into DRAS in the future.

Cancelled service registration

A service registration is automatically cancelled when the pesticide service registration holder’s location changes without prior notification to the director. The holder has to apply for a new service registration for the new location.
In addition, a pesticide service registration is cancelled when:

  • the business does not employ a certified applicator with the appropriate class of certificate for the pesticide service that is offered
  • the service’s insurance lapses

Registration will be reinstated once the service employs an appropriate class of applicator or validates its insurance. Registrations are non-transferable. Should a business be sold, the new owner must apply for a new service registration.
