The standard
The Alberta government worked with 7 regulatory organizations to develop a standard for professional sign off. The standard can be viewed at: Joint Practice Standard (PDF, 536 KB).
You must get professional sign off on remediation and reclamation work completed after January 1, 2008.
Use the following form: Professional Declaration for Reclamation Certificate Applications Form (PDF, 517 KB).
When to get sign off
The form must be signed once the following have been completed:
- Phase 1 environmental site assessments
- compliance option checklists for drilling waste disposal
- Phase 2 environmental site assessments
- remediation and confirmatory sampling
- reclamation detailed site assessments
Requirements
There are requirements for professional sign-off on reclamation certificates. The requirements can be viewed at: Professional Declaration Requirements – Reclamation Certificates.
Who can sign off
Professionals must meet standards to qualify to sign off on remediation and reclamation work.
Regulatory organizations
The professional must be a member in good standing in one of the following:
- Alberta Institute of Agrologists
- Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
- Alberta Forest Management Professionals (AAFMP)
- Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta
- Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta
- Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta
Other requirements
The professional must:
- have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in remediation or reclamation. This is based on the Competencies for Reclamation and Remediation Advisory Committee Recommendations Report.
- carry professional liability insurance (errors and omissions) unless undertaking work on behalf of their employer.
What to include
Sign-off must include the professional’s signature and either:
- registration/membership number OR
- stamp/seal

The Remediation and Reclamation Sign off Advisory Committee developed the requirements for professional sign off. The committee included representatives from:
- Alberta Environment and Protected Areas
- Alberta Human Resources and Employment
- Alberta Institute of Agrologists
- Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
- Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta
- Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta
- Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta
- College of Alberta Professional Foresters
- College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists
