Wildfire update

Grande Prairie Forest Area - June 12, 2025 - 10:20 am

High wildfire danger

The fire danger level is high throughout the entire Grande Prairie Forest Area. Despite some light rain in areas, grasses, leaves and other vegetation are dry in communities and much of the forest area, which could support a fast-moving wildfire. Please use caution if you are spending time or working outside.

Wildfire situation

GWF028 - Blueberry Mountain wildfire by Moonshine Lake Provincial Park

This wildfire remains classified as out of control and is estimated at 2,500 hectares in size. Fire activity continues on multiple sides of the fire, including the east side, which is within the boundaries of Moonshine Lake Provincial Park. However, growth in that direction has slowed, thanks to a fire guard constructed by Saddle Hills County heavy equipment crews and patrolled by their local fire departments. The Savanna Fire Department remains standing by to protect structures if needed, while the Blueberry and Happy Valley Fire Departments are actively supporting firefighting operations in the area. Alberta Parks remains actively involved in supporting the wildfire response.

Alberta Wildfire continues to respond with firefighting crews, heavy equipment, and aircraft, when smoke conditions allow for safe flight operations.

Kiskatinaw River wildfire (GBZ001)

Alberta Wildfire, the BC Wildfire Service, and the County of Grande Prairie continue operating under unified command to coordinate efforts in containing the Kiskatinaw River wildfire (GBZ001/G70422) which remains classified as out of control. This unified command is also working closely with the Peace River Regional District to ensure a coordinated regional response. The fire is estimated to be 21,679 hectares in size.

The wildfire did not experience any growth overnight. We are expecting reduced fire behavior today due to lower temperatures and higher humidity. A low-pressure system off the coast of B.C. is expected to bring several days of steady precipitation to the Dawson Creek Zone. While the exact location and total rainfall remain uncertain, some precipitation is likely in the wildfire area. Drying conditions are expected to return by late Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday.

Night operations were successful last night on this wildfire. Firefighting crews conducted operations on hot spots and carried out small-scale hand ignitions to remove unburnt fuel. Structure protection personnel remain active 24 hours a day in the Kelly Lake area.

On the northeast side of the wildfire, crews will continue working with multiple dozer groups to build fire guard. An additional crew will carry out small-scale hand ignitions, which help remove pockets of unburned vegetation and strengthen the containment line.

For more information on this wildfire and others in B.C., visit the BC Wildfire Service website.

  • Evacuation alert: Issued when there is a potential threat. This gives residents time to prepare so they are ready to act quickly by packing essentials, collecting important documents, fueling vehicles, making arrangements for pets and livestock, etc.
  • Evacuation order: Issued when there is an immediate risk to life or safety. Residents may be directed to leave the area immediately—there may be no time to gather belongings.

Wildfire smoke

Smoke may be visible and settling over our communities. Visit Fire Smoke Canada to see where the smoke is coming from.

If you have smoke-related health concerns, call 811 or visit the Alberta Health website

Illegal use of drones near wildfires

Flying a drone near or over a wildfire endangers our pilots and forces us to ground aircraft, causing delays in firefighting operations. You could face a hefty fine for putting aircraft and people at risk. Please give our firefighters the space they need to do their jobs safely.
