Introduction
All farm implement dealers and distributors operating within the province of Alberta must be licensed under the Farm Implement and Dealership Act. The act is administered by the Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO). This legislation provides both farmers and implement dealers with financial and legal security when purchasing farm equipment. Conducting business with an unlicensed farm implement dealer or distributor does not provide protection under the Farm Implement and Dealership Act.

How to get a licence
Dealer and distributor licences are issued annually. For new licences, contact the FAO to get an application form. For existing licences, a renewal form will be sent to you automatically. In accordance with the Farm Implement and Dealership Act, dealers and distributors are required to pay the non-refundable fees and levies as outlined in Table 1. A new business requiring a licence after the deadlines listed should contact the FAO for licence fee and levy amounts.

Notice of Failure to Perform
Purchasers can take these steps to have farm equipment repaired, replaced or refunded if it does not perform as intended.
