Overview
To access information on contaminated and reclaimed sites from the province’s regulators, the following options are available:
- Information on contaminated sites (for example, gas stations, drycleaners, wood processing facilities) regulated by the Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) is in 'Long Term Management' in the Environmental Records Viewer (ERV).
- Information on contaminated sites and activities (for example, upstream oil and gas) regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is in the AER Product Catalogue.
- Reclamation certificates for AER-regulated activities (for example, sour gas plant, coal mine) are in the AER Products and Services Catalogue – Reclamation Certificates.
- For information on reclamation certificates for EPA-regulated activities (for example, sand and gravel pits on private land), see 'Information requests', below.
- For information on reclamation certificates for activities (for example, sand and gravel pits on public lands) regulated by the Ministry of Forestry and Parks, request a search (for a fee) by email: [email protected], or login to your Electronic Transfer System (ETS) account to perform the search.
Environmental Records Viewer
Long Term Management
The Environmental Records Viewer (ERV) is a web-based tool that can be used to locate contaminated sites regulated by EPA, such as gas stations, drycleaners and wood-processing facilities. These sites are identified as ‘Long Term Management (LTM)’ cases because they require long-term, remedial measures. Recently, a LTM module was added to the ERV.
Features of the LTM module include:
- a map interface to locate the LTM cases in an area
- a selection tool to search for LTM cases
- access to all scientific and technical information about a site
- ability to identify sites with Environmental Site Assessments (conducted to determine quality of soil and groundwater) that have been reported to us
- locate ‘Open’ and ‘Closed’ LTM cases
- An open case is a site where Alberta Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines may have been exceeded and the site is undergoing assessment, exposure control, monitoring or remediation and awaits a remediation certificate.
- A closed case is a site that has been confirmed as not exceeding Alberta Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines and has received a remediation certificate.
- access to all publicly available documents associated with an LTM
OneStop Application Query
Use the OneStop Application Query tool to access information on reclamation certificates issued by the AER.
Information on oil- and gas-contaminated sites is submitted through the AER’s OneStop platform. Contaminated sites information includes all professional reports, correspondence and decisions that are received through the AER Record of Site Condition.
