Become a licensed driving instructor

Learn if you are eligible to become a driving instructor in Alberta and see the steps to get or renew a driving instructor licence.

Overview

Anyone who provides driver training in Alberta must have a licence, even if they do not charge a fee.

The type of licence you need depends on:

  • the class of licence you want to teach
  • whether you are applying for the first time, renewing or coming from another province

For full details, read the Licensed Driver Training School Procedures Manual. You must meet all requirements in the manual to be licensed.

Licence-specific eligibility

  • New applicants

All new applicants for a driving instructor’s licence must:

    • have the required class of driver’s licence and endorsements for the type of training to be delivered
    • meet the driver experience requirements
    • successfully pass all testing and training requirements
  • Out-of-province applicants

Under the Labour Mobility Act, you can convert your out-of-province driving instructor’s credential to obtain an Alberta driving instructor’s licence.

Once you have received your Alberta driving instructor’s licence, you will need to establish an affiliation with a driver training school and follow all steps to prove the local knowledge requirement before you can legally provide driving instruction.

For further information about converting your credential, see the ‘How to apply’ section, below.
