For judicial clerks, no two days are the same. Shifting priorities mean that clerks split their time between the courtroom, the office and working directly with Albertans.
Supporting Alberta’s justice system
The role
Judicial clerks support all 3 of Alberta’s courts: Alberta Court of Justice, Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and Court of Appeal of Alberta.
Urban clerks are based in either Edmonton or Calgary. They can develop specialized knowledge in one or more areas of law, including criminal, civil, family, estates, youth and traffic.
Regional clerks are located across the province and often travel between circuit court locations. They gain a range of skills in diverse areas of law, including criminal, bail court, civil, family, estates, youth, and traffic.
Key responsibilities include:
- preparing the courtroom before proceedings
- opening court and swearing in participants
- operating audio recording system and videoconferencing equipment
- ensuring accurate records of the court are captured and maintained
- preparing and issuing orders of the court
- managing exhibits in the courtroom (for example, money, documents, photographs and weapons)
- liaising with judiciary, lawyers, police and the general public

Becoming a judicial clerk is the first step in a fulfilling career with a clear path for advancement.

Entry-level experience requirements:
- 6 months of customer service, administrative or legal experience
- High school diploma

Clerks can apply to become a senior judicial clerk after 18 months of progressive performance and completion of Alberta Justice’s clerk training program.
As clerks progress further in their career, they can move into supervisory positions, including deputy judicial clerk and senior deputy judicial clerk roles.

- A judicial clerk can earn $23 to $28 an hour.
- A senior judicial clerk can earn $27 to $33 an hour.
