At about 11:32 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, a man holding a knife approached a City of Calgary bylaw officer who was sitting in a vehicle outside the Dalhousie CTrain station. The bylaw officer called 911 for police assistance.
Two CPS officers responded to the call. One officer carried a handgun and the other officer was armed with a rifle when they got out of their police vehicle.
The officers encountered the man on a walkway to the CTrain station, still holding the knife. The officer with the handgun brought out a conducted energy weapon (CEW) instead and pointed it at the man. The officers told the man to put down the knife and get on the ground. The man moved toward the officers while still holding the knife. One officer fired his CEW and the other fired his rifle immediately after, striking the man.
The man fell to the ground. The officers approached him and began first aid. Paramedics took the man to hospital. He survived his injuries. No one else was injured in the incident.
