Location: Airdrie, Alberta
Passion, empathy, understanding and an abundance of community spirit. These are the qualities that Airdrie’s Nina Nath brings to her role as an advocate for those dealing with a disability and as one of the community’s most committed volunteers.
As a senior and wheelchair user, Nina has confronted many of the same challenges as those for whom she gives voice. A co-founder of the Volunteer Airdrie Society in 2010 and a tireless advocate for action to address the unmet needs of seniors and the disabled, Nina’s dedicated service has taken her before Airdrie City Council to raise awareness among city leaders. Her efforts were also pivotal in the organization and hosting of Airdrie’s first ever Seniors and Disabled Festival as part of Senior’s Weeks in 2019, an event celebrating seniors and those living with disabilities and providing access to information on programs and services available within the community.
Nina’s own leadership abilities have been demonstrated time again as, along with her fellow board members, she has help guide the strategic direction of Volunteer Airdrie and respond to the needs of the community. During the pandemic, she lent her expertise and experience to the creation of several new seniors programs including the Friendly Phone Call program, free transportation services and development of a pamphlet featuring mental health resource information which was distributed to more than 18,000 Airdrie households.
Even as she contributes generously of her time and talents, Nina’s would prefer to refocus the spotlight on the contributions of others, stepping up to manage Volunteer Airdrie’s “Volunteer of the Month” program. For this and the many examples of community spirit she has shown, Nina Nath is a much deserving recipient of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition honours!
