For those who know of his daily routine, it is obvious that when it comes to volunteerism, Airdrie’s Dave Maffitt believes in leading by example.
A lifelong volunteer, Dave has served as board chair with Volunteer Airdrie since 2014, coming to the organization after 6 years with Airdrie Minor Basketball – serving 5 of those years as the organization’s president. It was experience that came in handy during his role as chair of the basketball events at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games, during which he organized and supervised 75 volunteers at 4 venues for the 3 days of games hosted in Airdrie. Sport continues to be a focus of Dave’s volunteer involvement as he counts the Alberta JKA Karate Association and Karate Alberta Association among the organizations he serves.
As Volunteer Airdrie’s chair, Dave has brought a renewed focus on youth, creating programming to engage and meet the needs of the community’s youngest residents. Dave is helping to build the next generation of non-profit and community leaders with programs including LEAD Youth Leadership, Youth Volunteer Corps and a local chapter of the province-wide initiative Youth@ the Table. Dave also serves as award leader in support of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program.
With so many executive roles, frontline volunteering in support of the community continues to be a passion of Dave’s – and he still finds time to assist some of Airdrie’s most vulnerable residents. Since May 2021, Dave has amassed over 700 completed trips with Calgary’s Drive Happiness, transporting senior and disabled Airdrie residents to and from Calgary to attend medical appointments, often making the trip as many as 5 times per day.
For his commitment and dedication as a leader and a hands-on volunteer, Dave Maffitt is a deserving Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program recipient.
