Northern Lights recipient – Cherilyn Michaels

On January 11, 2024, Cherilyn Michaels was recognized for her efforts to help refugees of the Ukraine war find a home and peace in Alberta.

Cherilyn Michaels

Location: St. Albert, Alberta

As war continues to rage in their homeland, Ukrainian citizens driven from their homes are finding peace and a warm welcome from Cherilyn Michaels and Edmonton Hosts Ukrainians. Cherilyn began the grassroots volunteer organization devoted to helping Ukrainians displaced by war find a home in Edmonton. The Facebook group Cherilyn initiated has seen incredible success, boasting more than 25,000 members with 475 families – over 1,300 men, women and children – hosted through the group.

Cherilyn coordinates connections between prospective/arrived refugees and those who have stepped up as hosts in Edmonton and area. Never willing to turn down a request for help, Cherilyn’s support has been invaluable, not only for Ukrainian newcomers but to their hosts and other volunteers. She has been a force of good for the entire area, an inspiration to the expansive team that supports the Edmonton Hosts Ukrainian mission and, from the perspective of her Facebook team members, a role model for Canadians.

For demonstrating her overwhelming compassion, empathy and humanity, Cherilyn Michaels is a fitting Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition recipient.
