Wildfire WWF017

Wildfire (WWF017) is currently estimated at 51 hectares in size and now classified as 'being held'. This means it is not expected to grow beyond existing boundaries, given the current weather conditions and resources. WWF017 is burning in the area of West Ridge which is approximately 3.5 km southeast of the Town of Whitecourt.

Fire behaviour was minimal during the overnight period and into this morning. Night-vision equipped helicopters worked the wildfire overnight and found minimal hotspots. These subdued conditions allow firefighters and aircraft to make good progress working from the perimeter inwards. Firefighters will also work on eliminating hotspots near homes, supported by helicopters. Municipal firefighters have been working alongside Alberta Wildfire and will continue to reinforce containment lines.

Today, firefighters anticipate strong gusting winds in the evening gusting up to 60 km/h from the northwest and could challenge firefighters for any hotspots within the perimeter of the fire. However, cloud cover, cooler temperatures, and higher relative humidity will help with firefighting operations.

The evacuation order issued by Woodland County remains in effect. More information may be found on the county website and Facebook page. More information can be found on Alberta Emergency Alert
