Wildfires of note - June 29, 2025

Red Earth East Complex

The Red Earth East complex is composed of 10 wildfires centered in the northeastern portion of the Slave Lake Forest Area. Some of the wildfires in the complex include:

• SWF092 near Red Earth Creek and Loon Lake First Nation is classified as out of control and currently 77,323 hectares (ha).
• SWF100 on the west side of Peerless Lake along Highway 686, is classified as out of control and is currently 17,308 ha.

Firefighters, supported by helicopters and heavy equipment, continue to work on extinguishing hot spots and are ready to respond to any new fire starts.

Evacuation orders

The following communities remain under and evacuation order:

• Chipewyan Lake
• Peerless and Trout Lake

The following communities have began re-entry but remain on a 2-hour evacuation alert.

• Red Earth Creek
• Loon River First Nation

Sousa Creek Wildfire Complex

The Sousa Creek wildfire, HWF036, has now been combined with wildfires HBZ001 and HBZ002 to form the Sousa Creek Wildfire Complex.

• HWF036, south of Chateh and east of Rainbow Lake, is classified as out of control and estimated at 53,295 ha in size. Rainy conditions decreased fire activity over the past few days. Firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment continue to extinguish hot spots and buld containment lines on the northern side of the wildfire closest to Chateh.

• HBZ001 and HBZ002 are burning along the Alberta and BC border and are being monitored by both Alberta Wildfire and BC Wildfire.

   

Slims Creek wildfire (PWF050)

The Slims Creek wildfire is 30 km north of the town of Manning and estimated to be 19,490 ha in size. Higher temperatures and less rain have increased fire activity. Firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters continue work to contain the wildfire.

Highway 35 is open between Hawk Hills and Keg River with speed reductions in place due to decreased visibility with smoke conditions.

Twin Lakes Provincial Recreation Area is in the vicinity of this fire and remains closed at this time.

Caribou Lake Wildfire (LWF090)

The Caribou Lake wildfire (LWF090) is burning 17 km southeast of Conklin and 28 km south of the Janvier airstrip. It is estimated to be 67,799 ha in size.

Firefighters have been making good progress on suppression of this wildfire with the help of heavy equipment and helicopters.

HWF065

Wildfire HWF065 is currently burning out of control approximately 15 km south of Meander River and 2 km from Highway 35.

Firefighters, airtankers, heavy equipment and helicopters continue to respond to this wildfire.

Kiskatinaw River wildfire (GBZ001)

The Kiskatinaw River wildfire originated in BC and is classified as being held at 26,315 ha. This wildfire is located approximately 68 km west of Grande Prairie.
