Red Earth East Complex

The Red Earth East complex is made up of numerous wildfires centered in the northeastern portion of the Slave Lake Forest Area. Some of the wildfires in the complex include:

SWF100 and SWF092 continue to be the most active wildfires in this complex. 

  • SWF092 near Red Earth Creek and Loon Lake First Nation is classified as out of control and currently 76,969 ha;
  • SWF100 on the west side of Peerless Lake, along Highway 686 is classified as out of control and is currently 15,598 ha.

Red Earth East Complex - Evacuation orders, The following communities remain under and evacuation order:

  • Chipewyan Lake;
  • Peerless and Trout Lake;
  • Red Earth Creek; and
  • Loon River First Nation.

Firefighters are expecting increased wildfire activity on the complex as temperatures increase throughout the day. They are working on reinforcing containment lines as we may see challenging fire behaviour in the coming days. Heavy equipment, helicopters, airtankers, and firefighters continue to work on limiting the spread of these wildfire. 

Kiskatinaw River Wildfire - near Kelly Lake, B.C. (GBZ001)

Alberta Wildfire, the BC Wildfire Service, and the County of Grande Prairie continue operating under unified command to coordinate efforts in containing the Kiskatinaw River wildfire (GBZ001/G70422) which remains classified as out of control. This unified command is also working closely with the Peace River Regional District to ensure a coordinated regional response. The fire is estimated to be 21,679 hectares in size.

Temperatures are expected to cool off slightly today and tomorrow with lower winds which may help firefighting efforts.  

Slims Creek (PWF050) 

PWF050 is 30 km north of the town of Manning. Cooler temperatures have decreased fire behaviour over the last few days, with minimal spread. Work continues to contain the wildfire with heavy equipment, helicopters and firefighter crews. 

Highway 35 is open between Hawk Hills and Keg River with speed reductions in place due to decreased visibility with smoke conditions. 

Twin Lakes Provincial Recreation Area is in the vicinity of this fire and also remains closed at this time. 

Blue Sky Wildfire (SWF088)

he Blue Sky wildfire (SWF088) is located 22 km north of Marten Beach. The wildfire is currently classified as out of control and is 12,386 hectares in size. Today, helicopters with buckets and heavy equipment continue work on active areas of the wildfire and firefighters continue to extinguish hot spots.  Highway 88 is currently open, however smoke in the area may reduce visibility. Tulip Lake (MWF026)

This wildfire is currently classified as out of control and is estimated at approximately 14,167 ha. It is burning 15 km northeast of Fort Fitzgerald and 28 km east of Fort Smith. This wildfire had minimal growth yesterday due to favorable weather conditions. 

There has been no significant growth and fire behaviour remains low, thanks to rain and cool temperatures. The fire is 36% contained. Winds will be shifting to come from the southeast later today at 5 km/h, with gusts up to 15 km/h.  These conditions continue to be favorable for firefighting efforts.

Firefighters, supported by aircraft, continue to take advantage of favorable weather conditions to secure and extend containment lines, focusing on the northwest, west, and southwest sides of the fire to prevent growth towards communities.

Sousa Creek (HWF036)

HWF036 is approximately 5 km south of the community of Chateh, 72 km west of the Town of High Level, and 27 km east of the Town of Rainbow Lake. This wildfire is estimated at 41,242 ha in size. 

Firefighters are continuing their work along and within the perimeter, focus on the north and northeast sides to secure and re-enforce the containment lines. They are working alongside heavy equipment and helicopters with water buckets. 

Caribou Lake (LWF090)

Caribou Lake Wildfire (LWF090) is currently burning out of control and is an estimated 67,715 ha in size.

Firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters with buckets worked on the north and south sides of the wildfire earlier today. 

Lac La Biche County has lifted the evacuation order for the area south of Winefred Lake. The area remains under an evacuation alert. For more information, visit the Lac La Biche County website
