Wildfires of note - June 07, 2025

There are 7 wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Most of these wildfires are currently classified as out of control.

Red Earth East Complex

The Red Earth East complex is made up of numerous wildfires centered in the northeastern portion of the Slave Lake Forest Area. Some of the wildfires in the complex include:

SWF100 and SWF092 continue to be the most active wildfires in this complex. 

• SWF085 near Chipewyan Lakes is classified as out of control and is currently 132,247 hectares (ha);
• SWF092 near Red Earth Creek and Loon Lake First Nation is classified as out of control and currently 60,408 ha;
• SWF094 is classified as out of control and approximately 83,673 ha; and
• SWF095 near the Peerless Lake community is classified as out of control and currently 769 ha.
• SWF100 on the west side of Peerless Lake, along Highway 686 is classified as out of control and is currently 7,999 ha.

Red Earth East Complex - Evacuation orders
The following communities remain under and evacuation order:

• Chipewyan Lake;
• Peerless Lake;
• Trout Lake;
• Red Earth Creek; and
• Loon River First Nation.

Heavy equipment, helicopters and firefighters worked to limit the spread of wildfire SWF092 yesterday. Firefighters will continue working on hot spots on this wildfire today. 

Tulip Lake (MWF026)

This wildfire is currently classified as out of control and is estimated at approximately 13,183 ha. It is burning 15 km northeast of Fort Fitzgerald and 28 km east of Fort Smith.

Recent rain and cooler temperatures helped to lower fire behaviour today. This has allowed crews to make progress on containment lines. Crews, heavy equipment, helicopters, and airtankers are continuing suppression efforts and reinforcement of containment lines. 

Kiskatinaw River Wildfire - near Kelly Lake, B.C. (GBZ001)

The wildfire has crossed into Alberta. This wildfire is currently estimated at 14,276 ha in size.  

Overnight smoke helped to slow the wildfire. Today, stronger winds are expected; however, continued smoke cover may help keep temperatures lower and relative humidity higher. If the smoke lifts, more active fire behaviour is likely. Efforts to control the wildfire continue on multiple fronts, with crews, aircraft, and heavy equipment deployed. Smoke may reduce air support today. 

Alberta Wildfire continues to work closely with B.C. Wildfire Service and the County of Grande Prairie to respond to this wildfire. 

Slims Creek (PWF050) 

This wildfire is located 5 km west of Highway 35 and 3 km northwest of the Twin Lakes Provincial Recreation Area and is estimated to be 4,876 ha in size. This wildfire grew significantly yesterday due to windy conditions. Airtankers, ground crews, heavy equipment and helicopters continue to work on this wildfire today. Smoke in the area is limiting air operations due to visibility. The County of Northern Lights has issued a wildfire alert for residents north of Hawk Hills and around the Twin Lakes Provincial Park.

Sousa Creek (HWF036)

HWF036 is approximately 5 km south of the community of Chateh, 72 km west of the Town of High Level, and 27 km east of the Town of Rainbow Lake. This wildfire is estimated at 39,595 ha in size. 

Minimal growth has been observed over the last 24 hours on this wildfire due to the efforts of ground and air crews and lower fire behaviour. Heavy equipment continues to work along the northeast side of the fire, near Sousa Creek. Additional heavy equipment has started building containment line along the northwest side, south of Highway 58. Firefighters with helicopter support will continue to work on reinforcing containment lines. Night operations supported this wildfire last.

Travelers on Highway 58 should expect delays or intermittent closures and are encouraged to check 511 for updates.

Caribou Lake (LWF090)

Caribou Lake Wildfire (LWF090) is currently burning out of control and is an estimated 66,420 ha in size.

Alberta Wildfire had crews working overnight on the northwest side of the wildfire. Today, crews will continue to focus on the north and south sides of the wildfire, which are the closest to infrastructure.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has put an evacuation alert in place for the hamlet of Conklin. 

Blue Sky (SWF088) 

This wildfire remains classified as out of control at an estimated 10,448 ha. It is located approximately 25 km north of Marten Beach and 3.5 km southeast of Utikuma.

While overall fire behaviour remains low, some increased activity was observed on the northern side of the fire this afternoon. In response, helicopters and airtankers were deployed to suppress hot spots, while heavy equipment continued constructing containment lines and firefighters were extinguishing hot spots.
