Red Earth Complex

The Red Earth East complex is composed of 8 wildfires centered in the northeastern portion of the Slave Lake Forest Area, east of Highway 88. The following wildfires are near communities: 

  • SWF085, which impacted the community of Chipewyan Lake, is out of control at 135,971 ha. The wildfire threat to the community of Chipewyan Lake remains minimal. Firefighters in a helicopter continue to monitor the wildfire and have reported very little fire activity over the past several days.
  • SWF089, located approximately 5.5 km east of Peerless Lake, is out of control at 12,920 ha. Fire activity continues to be low, and firefighters are extinguishing hot spots on the southwest side of the wildfire.
  • SWF092, located approximately 7 km southeast of Red Earth Creek and 8.5 km west of Trout Lake, is out of control at 79,577 ha. Firefighters, with the support from helicopters with buckets, are extinguishing hot spots across the wildfire. Heavy equipment is building containment lines on the south end of the wildfire, progressing further every day.
  • SWF095, located approximately 5 km from Peerless Lake and 7 km from Trout Lake, is 1,307 ha in size and is classified as being held. There is no threat of fire spread to nearby communities.
  • SWF100, located approximately 5 km west of Peerless Lake, is out of control at 18,344 ha. Firefighters are working on the east side of the wildfire, extinguishing hot spots along containment lines with the support of helicopters with buckets.

Evacuation orders

The following communities remain under and evacuation order:

  • Chipewyan Lake
  • Peerless and Trout Lake

The following communities remain on a 2-hour evacuation alert:

  • Red Earth Creek
  • Loon River First Nation

Sousa Creek Complex

The Sousa Creek Complex is composed of wildfires HWF036, HBZ001 and HBZ002. None of these wildfires pose a threat to communities. 

  • HWF036, south of Chateh and east of Rainbow Lake, is classified as out of control and estimated at 52,672 ha. Fire activity is low and the wildfire has not grown recently. Firefighters continue to reinforce containment lines with the support of heavy equipment and helicopters.
  • HBZ001 and HBZ002 are both being held at 87,549 ha and 12,373 ha respectively. They are burning along the Alberta and B.C. border.

Caribou Lake wildfire (LWF090)

The Caribou Lake wildfire (LWF090) is burning 17 km southeast of Conklin and 28 km south of the Janvier airstrip. It is classified as out of control and estimated to be 67,866 ha. Firefighters are working on containing the wildfire with the help of heavy equipment and helicopters. There is no threat to communities. 

LWF132

Wildfire LWF132, located in the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, is classified as out of control at 3,374 ha. The fire has reached the west side of Primrose Lake. Strong winds have led to increased fire activity. Firefighting efforts continue today with helicopters with buckets and water skimmers. Operations are focused on the north and south sides of the fire.
