Wildfire pledge

Alberta Wildfire is encouraging the Wood Buffalo community to take a pledge to help protect our forests.

Call 310-FIRE (3473) to report a wildfire in a forested area.

Introduction

Alberta Wildfire is asking residents in the Fort McMurray Forest Area (FMFA) to take the wildfire pledge to help raise awareness and prevent catastrophic wildfires. Those who sign their names to the pledge by August 15, 2026, will be entered for a chance to win an educational helicopter tour.

Join Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Fire Chief Jody Butz and Fort McMurray Forest Area Manager Paul St. John in taking the wildfire pledge today!

“All communities in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are situated within the Boreal Forest, where wildfire is a natural part of our landscape. Keeping our communities safe is a responsibility we all share. By increasing awareness, taking proactive steps, and working together, we can reduce risk and protect what matters most and ensure our region remains safe place to live, work, and grow.”

Jody Butz, Fire Chief of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo

"Reducing wildfire risk is a shared responsibility. As wildfire season is already underway and we mark the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River wildfire, I encourage all residents to take the wildfire pledge and remain mindful of their actions, especially when spending time outdoors. Since many wildfires are caused by human activity, simple precautions in forested areas can make a significant difference. By working together, we can help protect the community we call home"

Paul St. John, Fort McMurray Forest Area Manager

Take the Wildfire Pledge

Did you know that 60% of wildfires were human-caused in 2025?

Let’s work together to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Commit to reducing human-caused wildfires today:

  • I will always use fire responsibly and safely in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
  • I will fully extinguish my campfire by soaking it, stirring it and soaking it again.
  • I will stop and check my off-highway vehicle regularly for built-up debris while riding off-road.
  • I will report any smoke I see in the forested areas to 310-FIRE.
  • I will be an ambassador for fire safety when enjoying Alberta’s forested areas with friends and family.

Educational helicopter tour

By taking the pledge and submitting the form below by August 15, 2026, you will be entered to win a helicopter tour of the Fort McMurray Forest Area. The winner and up to 3 guests will take to the skies at the end of August.

The tour will start at the Alberta government forestry warehouse with a tour of wildland firefighter gear. The group will then fly above the site of the Horse River wildfire to learn about fire ecology and tactics used to suppress wildfire. The tour will also include a stop at a wildfire lookout tower.

Eligibility

  • Residents of the Fort McMurray Forest Area who take the pledge before 11:59 p.m., August 15, 2026, will be entered for the helicopter tour draw via the form below.
  • We will draw and announce the winner on August 19, 2026.
  • The winner will be contacted by Fort McMurray Forest Area staff and announced on Alberta Wildfire social media channels.
