Wildfire situation 

Since January 1, 2026 there have been 17 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area, burning approximately 133 hectares (ha). For up-to-date information on wildfire locations, status, size, statistics, visit the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard.

WWF017

Wildfire WWF017 is located in the area of West Ridge which is approximately 3.5 km southeast of the Town of Whitecourt and less than 1 km south of Highway 43. It is currently classified as out of control at 51 ha. 

The firefighters, aircraft and equipment continue to make good progress but there is still work to be done. A containment line has been established with heavy equipment and water hose around the fire to prevent spread. Municipal firefighters have been working alongside Alberta Wildfire and will continue to reinforce containment lines. Structure protection has been deployed to protect homes and critical infrastructure in the area and will remain until conditions improve. 

Winds are forecasted to be 10-15 km/h from the northwest. Later this evening, firefighters anticipate a wind shift to come from the east 15-20 km/h, potentially increasing fire activity towards the west. Cross-over conditions are still expected today, which means that the temperature will be higher than the relative humidity. These conditions can create more intense fire behaviour. Firefighters are aware of these possible changes and can adjust as conditions develop. Airtankers are available if required.

Very little fire activity was observed early this morning over WWF017 located 3.5 km southeast of the Town of Whitecourt (May 12, 2026 at 10:30 am).

Work safely and prevent wildfires 

As temperatures rise and vegetation continues to dry, work like welding, grinding, cutting and seasonal activities like mowing dry grass can increase the risk of wildfire. These activities can cause sparks, friction and hot exhaust that can ignite nearby combustible materials.

To reduce the risk of wildfire, individuals are encouraged to complete activities like these during the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are cooler and humidity levels are higher. Avoid conducting hot work during windy conditions, ensure equipment is well maintained, and use spark arrestors where applicable. Taking these precautions can help prevent human-caused wildfires.

Get your free fire permit

A fire permit is required for any burning within the Forest Protection Area (FPA), except for campfires. Permits are required during wildfire season, from March 1 to October 31. Fire permits are free and can be requested online or by calling 780-778-7166. As a reminder, if the wind is gusting over 15 km/h or increases beyond the limit on your permit, immediately extinguish your fire.
