Wildfire update

Whitecourt Forest Area - June 26, 2026

Low wildfire danger

The wildfire danger for the Whitecourt Forest Area is low due to recent rainfall. A spark, friction or hot exhaust can still start a wildfire in any conditions. Please use caution when spending time outdoors.

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, 2026 there have been 25 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area, burning approximately 133 hectares (ha). For up-to-date information on wildfire locations, status, size and statistics, visit the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard.

Celebrate safely with fireworks

As Canada Day approaches, residents and visitors are reminded to celebrate responsibly, especially when using fireworks. Anyone planning to use fireworks or exploding targets in Alberta’s Forest Protection Area must receive written permission from a forest officer. Fire permits are free and can be requested online or by calling 780-778-7166. In order to accommodate requests please contact Forestry at least 3 days in advance to allow time for the potential increase in permits.

Trail maintenance

Starting June 29, Alberta Wildfire crews will be working along the trail systems in the Fort Assiniboine area to remove fallen trees on the walking trails. Crews will start at the Athabasca Viewpoint Staging Area and the Klondike Trail Staging Area working their way inward. Cleaning up dead and downed trees ensures a safe recreational area for everyone to enjoy! Please be mindful of the work in progress and give space for crews to work.
