Wildfire update

Whitecourt Forest Area - July 30, 2025

High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Whitecourt Forest Area is now high, due to an increase in temperatures. Hot and dry conditions are forecasted to continue. Wildfires are likely to start easily and spread quickly, making them more challenging to control.

Please continue to use caution with outdoor burning, as well as any work or recreational activities that could spark a wildfire.

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, 2025, there have been 46 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area that have burned 2,795 hectares (ha).

Wildfires WWF041 and WWF023 are currently classified as under control. A wildfire is classified as under control once it has been successfully managed and there is no risk that the fire will spread. These wildfires may still emit smoke. Firefighters will monitor these wildfires for activity and respond accordingly.

Learn more about wildfire status and view active wildfires, their locations and statistics on the interactive map on our wildfire status page.

Wildfire prevention

When planning for the long weekend, keep wildfire prevention in mind. Even with recent rain in some areas, warm, dry and windy conditions can still lead to wildfires. If you're spending time outdoors, never leave a campfire unattended, keep your off-highway vehicle free of debris and ensure all fires are fully extinguished before you leave. Before having a campfire, be sure to check Alberta Fire Bans for any restrictions in the area.

Get your free fire permit

You will need a fire permit for any burning in the Forest Protection Area, except for a campfire, from March 1 to October 31.

Fire permits ensure safe burning practices are being followed and allow staff to know where burning is approved. Municipalities may have rules and restrictions in place. If assistance is required, call the area office at 780-778-7153 during regular business hours.
