The wildfire danger in the Whitecourt Forest Area is low.
At this time, recent rain has helped reduce the wildfire risk. Wildfires can still start in cool, damp conditions. Later into the weekend temperatures are expected to rise which will dry out vegetation and increase the wildfire danger. Be cautious if you're spending time outdoors and do your part to prevent wildfires.
Wildfire situation
Since January 1, 2025, there have been 57 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area that have burned 2,795 hectares. There are currently 2 active wildfires burning in the Forest Area, and they're classified as under control.

Off-highway vehicle safety
When riding an off-highway vehicle (OHV) stop often and remove the debris that accumulates on your machine. Dry grass that is heated by your exhaust can start a wildfire when it falls to the ground.
FireSmart farm and acreage
Always ensure your farming equipment is in good working order. Any small spark can start a wildfire due to dry conditions in some areas of the forest area. You should always carry firefighting equipment with you like a fire extinguisher, shovel, or a water vessel when working with heavy equipment outdoors.
Get your free fire permit
You will need a fire permit for any burning in the Forest Protection Area, except for a campfire, from March 1 to October 31.
Fire permits ensure safe burning practices are being followed and allow staff to know where burning is approved. Municipalities may have rules and restrictions in place. If assistance is required, call the area office at 780-778-7153 during regular business hours.
