The wildfire danger in the Whitecourt Forest Area is moderate due to recent thunderstorms.
While the area experienced cooler temperatures and received rain over the weekend, wildfires can still start, especially in dry areas that didn't receive rain. Please continue to use caution with outdoor burning, as well as any work or recreational activities that could spark a wildfire.
Wildfire situation
Since January 1, 2025, there have been 52 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area that have burned 2,795 hectares (ha).
There are currently 4 active wildfires in the forest area, that are all under control. A wildfire is classified as under control once it has been successfully managed and there is no risk that the fire will spread. These wildfires may still emit smoke. Firefighters are monitoring these wildfires for activity and respond accordingly.

Lightning-caused wildfires
There has been an increase in wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area due to lightning. Thunderstorms could lead to more lightning-caused wildfires in the coming days. If you see smoke or flames in the Whitecourt Forest Area, call 310-FIRE(3473) to report it.
Quick reporting helps wildfire crews respond faster and reduces the risk of wildfires spreading.
Get your free fire permit
You will need a fire permit for any burning in the Forest Protection Area, except for a campfire, from March 1 to October 31.
Fire permits ensure safe burning practices are being followed and allow staff to know where burning is approved. Municipalities may have rules and restrictions in place. If assistance is required, call the area office at 780-778-7153 during regular business hours.
