Low wildfire danger
The wildfire danger is currently low but will increase as the snow melts exposing dry, dead grass that can ignite easily.
Wildfire situation
Since January 1, 2026 there have been 7 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area, burning a total of 0.25 hectares. For up-to-date information on wildfire locations, status, size, and statistics, visit the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard.
Get your fire permit
A fire permit is required for any burning within the Forest Protection Area (FPA), except for campfires. Permits are required during wildfire season, from March 1 to October 31. Fire permits are free and can be requested online or by calling 780-778-7166.
When requesting your permit, you should have the following information ready:
- Name of landowner or company, and a representative
- Contact phone number
- Legal land description or latitude/longitude
- Burn material information
- Photos of the proposed burn materials and location can be helpful to include.
As a reminder, if the wind is gusting over 15 km/h or increases beyond the limit on your permit, immediately extinguish your fire.
Upcoming season
Spring is a high-risk time for wildfires. Once snow melts, dry grass can fuel fast-moving fires during warm, dry, or windy periods. These conditions will only improve once sufficient spring rain falls and vegetation becomes green with moisture.
