Submitting a privacy complaint

How to report a complaint on collection, use or disclosure of your personal information by a public body.

Overview

If you believe your personal information has been improperly collected, used, or disclosed by a public body, you can submit a privacy complaint.

Alberta public bodies

When submitting a complaint, you will first be required to contact the public body, in writing, and with sufficient details directly to the public body as an initial action to try to resolve the matter.

Find a Privacy Officer

If you skip this step and submit your complaint directly to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, your complaint will be returned with direction to contact the public body.

Government of Alberta

If you believe a Government of Alberta department inappropriately collected, used, or disclosed your personal information, you can submit a complaint by email to the Privacy Services.

Submit a privacy complaint

When submitting your complaint:

  • identify the ministry the complaint is being made against
  • provide sufficient detail for the government to understand your privacy complaint

We respond to complaints as soon as practicable.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

If you feel your matter has not been resolved by an Alberta public body or the Government of Alberta or would like a review of the decision you may request a review by the Information and Privacy Commissioner.

To request a review, you must submit a written request to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
