The wildfire danger in the Slave Lake Forest Area is moderate. Wildfires can start and spread in cooler conditions but are less likely to become severe if detected quickly. Be cautious with outdoor fires and activities that create heat or a spark.

Prevent wildfires
In Alberta, more than half of wildfires are caused by people, which makes prevention important, especially during the fall season. Do your part by following simple safety steps while you’re farming, camping or riding off-highway vehicles.
Farming
- Regularly inspect machinery and clear away debris, especially around hot spots.
- Keep equipment well maintained to reduce the risk of sparks.
- Always carry firefighting tools on your equipment, including a shovel, fire extinguisher and bucket.
Camping
- Use designated fire rings in campgrounds and backyards.
- Keep campfires small, controlled, and never leave them unattended.
- Fully extinguish fires before leaving or going to bed: soak with water, stir the ashes, then soak again.
- Make sure the fire is completely out. If the ashes are cool to the touch, it’s safe.
Riding off-highway vehicles
- Stop frequently to clear debris like grass, moss or muskeg from your machine.
- Carry essential firefighting tools like a shovel, fire extinguisher and bucket.
- Avoid riding through dry vegetation where heat or sparks could ignite a fire.
If you burn it, get a permit
From March 1 to October 31, fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.
Fire permits are free and can be requested online. Visit firepermits.alberta.ca to request your fire permit online or call your local Forestry office:
