Extreme wildfire danger
The wildfire danger is extreme in the Slave Lake Forest Area due to hot, dry and windy conditions.
A wildfire will ignite very easily in these conditions and can quickly grow out of control. Avoid all outdoor activities that have the potential to spark a fire.
Wildfire situation
Edith Lake wildfire (SWF076)
The Edith Lake wildfire was detected on the afternoon of May 25 and is located approximately 7-8 km north of Swan Hills and 3 km west of highway 33. This wildfire is currently classified as out of control and estimated to be 2,000 hectares (ha).
Firefighters, helicopters, airtankers and heavy equipment operators continue to fight this wildfire. This afternoon strong winds from the northwest have caused the wildfire to increase in intensity on the east side.
Night vision equipped helicopters, firefighters and heavy equipment will continue to work through the night.
Two wildland urban interface crews and a high volume water delivery system are being deployed for the Town of Swan Hills. An incident command team and additional fire crews arrive tomorrow.
Due to smoke causing poor visibility, Highway 33 has been closed. Visit 511 Alberta for the most up to date information on road closures.

New wildfires
Firefighters in helicopters are responding to multiple wildfires caused by lightning.
SWF078 was detected late this afternoon and is located just north of Whitefish Lake First Nation. The wildfire is 5 hectares in size and is classified as out of control. Airtankers are making good progress on slowing the spread and a group of heavy equipment is enroute. At this time there is no threat to the community.
Firefighters with helicopters and airtankers have been responding to multiple wildfires located 8 to 17 km west of Chipewyan Lakes. At this time there is no threat to the community.

Fire restriction
A fire restriction is in effect for the Slave Lake Forest Area. Under this restriction, all outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands and existing fire permits are suspended.
Prohibited
- Outdoor wood fires on public lands, including backcountry and random camping areas.
- Any burning, other than a campfire, on private land
- Fireworks and exploding targets
Allowed
- Safe wood campfires on private land including provincial campgrounds with designated fire ring
- Backyard firepits
- Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances
- Barbecue charcoal briquettes
- Indoor wood fires
- Open flame oil devices
