Wildfire update

Slave Lake Forest Area - June 16, 2026

Low wildfire danger

Due to recent rain across most of the Slave Lake Forest Area the fire danger is now low. Fire can still ignite, despite cooler temperatures and wet conditions. Use caution if you're spending time outdoors.

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, 2026, the Slave Lake Forest Area has responded to 39 wildfires and approximately 34 hectares have burned.

Currently, one under control wildfire is active in the forest area.

Rainy day activities to prepare for wildfires

Take advantage of the upcoming wet weather to prepare for a potential wildfire. While outdoor work may have to wait, there are plenty of indoor tasks that can help protect your home and reduce stress later.

  • Complete a FireSmart home assessment: Learn how vulnerable your property may be to wildfire and identify practical ways to reduce risk around your home and yard with this simple questionnaire.
  • Make a FireSmart list: Plan future outdoor tasks like cleaning gutters, trimming trees, removing dead vegetation, and moving firewood away from structures.
  • Prepare your evacuation essentials: Build or refresh grab-and-go bags with medications, chargers, important documents, pet supplies and a few days of clothing so you can leave quickly if needed.
  • Stay informed: Download the free Alberta Wildfire app and sign up for local emergency alerts from your community and/or Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA).

Get your free fire permit

A fire permit is required for any burning within the Forest Protection Area (FPA), except campfires. Permits are required during wildfire season, from March 1 to October 31.
