The fire danger is moderate in the Slave Lake Forest Area. However, portions of the forest area that have not received precipitation remain at high fire danger. Wildfires can start in any condition, so continue to use caution during any activity that can cause a spark.
Wildfire situation
There are two active wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area.
SWF059, which was discovered on July 24, 2026, is currently being held at 3 hectares (ha). Firefighters supported by helicopters will return to the fire on Sunday, July 26, 2026. The wildfire is located along the southeastern edge of McConachie Lake, which is approximately 60 kilometers north of Slave Lake.
SWF060 was discovered on July 24, 2026, and is now under control at 0.02 ha. It is not expected to grow beyond it's current size. The fire is located approximately 24 kilometers southeast of Trout Lake and 54 kilometers northwest of Wabasca-Desmarais. Alberta Wildfire will continue suppression efforts until the fire extinguished.
There is no risk to communities from these wildfires.
Since January 1, 2026, the Slave Lake Forest Area has responded to 60 wildfires, which have burned approximately 41 ha.

Municipal wildfire reporting
Sharing timely information about active wildfires with Albertans is an important part of the Alberta government's approach to wildfire safety. That’s why we’ve enabled municipalities to report wildfires occurring within their borders to have them included on the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard and Alberta Wildfire Status app. The blue flame icon indicates a municipal fire. Read the map legend to understand the different flame icons.
Alberta Wildfire has also introduced response type reporting to explain how a wildfire is being managed. Wildfires within Alberta Wildfire’s jurisdiction will be assigned one of three response types:
- Full response: Immediate and aggressive suppression action is taken.
- Modified response: Some suppression action is used to contain a wildfire within a pre-determined boundary.
- Monitored response: The wildfire is observed and assessed.
