The wildfire danger is very high in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Warm daytime temperatures, extremely dry vegetation and strong winds are creating conditions where wildfires can start easily and spread quickly.
Wildfire situation
RWF075 was discovered earlier today and is being driven by strong winds. This wildfire is classified as out of control and currently estimated at one hectare in size, but is producing considerable smoke due to current conditions. Crews continue to make good progress on suppression efforts and are being supported by helicopters conducting bucketing operations. The public is asked to avoid the area and give crews room to work safely.

Several wildfires have already been detected and extinguished today. Grassland areas are particularly vulnerable to wildfire during the spring, fall and winter months, especially during periods of strong wind, as dry vegetation and cured grasses can support rapid fire spread. Resources are in place and ready to respond quickly to any new wildfire starts.
Wind conditions
In the Forest Protection Area, all burning requires a fire permit and permit conditions must be followed at all times. When winds exceed 12 km/h, all burn piles must be fully extinguished. Forecast wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h in parts of the Forest Area have the potential to cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult or impossible to control. Anyone planning open burning should postpone those activities until conditions improve and ensure all burning remains in compliance with permit requirements.
Do your part to prevent wildfires
Campfires and other warming or cooking fires can lead to human-caused wildfires if they are not properly extinguished. Anyone having an outdoor fire is responsible for ensuring it is fully extinguished before leaving the site. To properly extinguish a fire, soak it with water, stir the ashes and soak it again until the entire area is cool to the touch. Cooler temperatures, frost and even light snow do not guarantee a fire is out, as fires can smoulder underground and reignite when conditions become favourable.
