Wildfire update

Rocky Mountain House Forest Area - October 16, 2026

Very High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger is now very high in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Warm daytime temperatures, dry vegetation and gusty winds are creating conditions where wildfires can start easily and spread quickly. Anyone spending time outdoors is reminded to use extra caution with campfires, never leave a fire unattended and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.

Wind conditions

Wind conditions are expected to be a significant concern over the next several days. In the Forest Protection Area, all burning requires a fire permit and permit conditions must be followed at all times. When winds exceed 12 km/h, all burn piles must be fully extinguished. Forecast wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h in parts of the Forest Area have the potential to cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult or impossible to control. Anyone planning open burning should postpone those activities until conditions improve and ensure all burning remains in compliance with permit requirements.

Do your part to prevent wildfires

Campfires and other warming or cooking fires can lead to human-caused wildfires if they are not properly extinguished. Anyone having an outdoor fire is responsible for ensuring it is fully extinguished before leaving the site. To properly extinguish a fire, soak it with water, stir the ashes and soak it again until the entire area is cool to the touch. Cooler temperatures, frost and even light snow do not guarantee a fire is out, as fires can smoulder underground and reignite when conditions become favourable.
