Wildfire update

Rocky Mountain House Forest Area - May 26, 2026

High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is now high due to elevated temperatures and a lack of significant moisture. Conditions are favourable for wildfires to start, and caution is advised when spending time outdoors.

Rain is forecast in the coming week, which may help reduce overall wildfire risk. However, potential thunderstorms may bring lightning, increasing the risk of new wildfire starts.

Wildfire situation

RWF036 is now classified as under control and estimated at 957 hectares. This wildfire is located along Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) near the Highway 734 junction. Firefighters and helicopters will remain in the area until it is fully extinguished. Recreationists are asked to avoid the area until operations are complete. Burned areas remain hazardous, with unstable trees that may fall without warning and lingering hotspots within the wildfire perimeter. Speed reductions are in effect on Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) to support safe firefighting operations. Visit 511Alberta for current conditions. If travelling in the area, consider alternate routes when possible.

Since January 1, 2026, the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area has responded to 41 wildfires.

Choose a safe campfire site

A safe campfire starts with choosing the right location. In campgrounds or recreational areas, use the designated stoves, fire rings or fire pits. These are designed to keep fires from spreading and are the best choice for a safe campfire. When outside of a campground, choose a site that is clear of dry grass and vegetation, away from low hanging branches and on level ground sheltered from wind.

Never leave your campfire unattended and always have water nearby in case your campfire escapes.

When you're done, ensure your campfire is completely extinguished. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until the ashes are cool to the touch.
